Hopside Brewery and the Old Polish Corner: Fresh Flavors in Alpena

Alpena is known for its incredible natural landscape, historic community, and maritime adventures – but did you know that there are new food experiences to explore with every trip to this Northeast Michigan destination? A unique culinary heritage in the area is supported by a community of local food business owners, including two entrepreneurs who have recently opened their doors and are adding their own spin.

Hopside Brewery Serves Up Brews with Buddies

In 2021, Hopside Brewery opened its doors after three years of careful planning between five friends ready to share their passion for brewing with the world. Now, their budding business has turned into a booming venture with the addition of Illuminescent Spirits, their on-site distillery. Visitors to Hopside can expect to find a full food menu, 24 beers on tap, and 6 spirits in their welcoming, ‘chill’ environment. Not only that, but to-go options are plentiful with beers in cases, and Social District cups available to take your Pear.a.dise vodka cocktail to downtown parks. Co-owner Tyler Greenway has only good things to say about pursuing his dream. “Business is good, we appreciate how much the community continues to support us and we’ll keep sharing our passion for something we love.”

The Old Polish Corner Brings Upscale Polish Fare

Just across the Thunder Bay River, the Old Polish Corner is owned and operated by Brian Peterson, 5th generation sausage maker and owner of Nowicki’s Sausage Shoppe. What started out as an opportunity to improve their neighborhood by changing a ‘biker bar’ into a cleaned-up establishment has become a destination Polish-inspired restaurant. From handmade soups and Kluski noodles to weekly Polish fusion features, the Old Polish Corner is serving up Old World flavors in a casual upscale atmosphere. Since their grand opening in October of 2022, they have honed their menu to their popular specialty dishes and brought in a large selection of Polish beers, vodkas, and liqueurs. Smacznego!
