What Your Farmers Market Manager Wants You to Know

Have you ever strolled through the stalls of your favorite local farmers market and wondered how it all came together? As magical as it would be that every farmer decided to show up at the same time on the same day and there were never any parking issues and no one needed to look up fire codes, farmers markets are actually powered by amazing professionals called market managers. Market managers plan for each market and are on-site day of to make sure it all goes smoothly – which can be intense, depending on the size and scope of your market!

It’s thanks to your local market manager that it’s easy to find local tomatoes and cucumbers. But what would your market manager hope that you know when you come to the market? We asked them! Here are their replies:

“I want market goers to know that when they shop at a farmers market they’re voting with their dollars to support small businesses, local agriculture, and family farms. That many markets in Michigan accept food assistance and take EBT/Bridge cards, and even offer incentives like Double Up Food Bucks, so that your food dollars can go further than you might think at a farmers market! That farmers markets are really great if you have questions about where your food comes from and how it’s grown. Many vendors are more than happy to discuss their practices with you. This is a wonderful educational opportunity for kids too! That managers at markets want their markets to be welcoming and accessible for everyone! If you think farmers markets are just for snooty rich people, give your local market a chance. You might just discover some new favorite foods, and plenty of friendly faces!” – Tanya Andrews, Market Manager of Pittsfield Township Farmers Market

“Stock up on small bills! $1, $5 and $10 are preferred. Leave pets at home. Bring your own reusable bags or baskets. Only shop during market hours-vendors need time and space to set up so they can best serve you! And treat others with kindness and respect. We’re all doing our best and we’re here to have a good time!” –Sara Johnson, Market Manager of the Downtown Marquette Farmers Market

“The Kingsley Farmers Market is more than just a market, it’s a party with produce! This weekday evening market is a community event aimed at bringing local families together for an evening of affordable local produce and goods, free workshops and live music in a beautiful park setting with a playground, splash pad, shaded picnic tables and a TADL library next door! Farmers Markets are not only a great place to get groceries supporting local farmers and producers, they are also a vibrant place for community to gather and connect!” – Sierra LaRose, Market Manager of the Kingsley Farmers Market
