Murals at Mealtimes: Art and Food in Jackson

Our great state is full of scenic drives, local artists, craft beer, and some of the most breathtaking landscapes you can find in the country. At the crossroads of Michigan’s major highways is Jackson County, a must-stop for visitors passionate about breathtaking views, as well as delicious food, and drinks.

When it comes to views, there’s no view that quite compares to that of art, and when the art is as tall as a building, it’s hard to miss. Jackson is known for its 75 Bright Walls murals painted by artists from all over the world. With most of the murals lining the streets of their downtown, there are plenty of spots to enjoy a bite and take in some views that are hard to find in a downtown anywhere else.

Beside Jackson’s premier downtown restaurant, Veritas, is a charming little alley, lined with the glow of bistro lights, plants, and yes, more sights to take in. Along the wall of Veritas’ outdoor patio is an enormous mural by I am Eelco, from the Netherlands. Enjoy expertly crafted cocktails, sushi, poke bowls, or steak for a date night or a friend’s night out. You won’t regret an extra old-fashioned or martini at Veritas, where craft cocktails are their specialty. Nestled in their quaint outdoor dining space, it’s easy to stay and munch on some rock shrimp or even some crème brûlée for dessert.

Grand River Brewery has been a local favorite for just over a decade. Their industrial-style brewery is a fun hub to stop by for a wood-fired pizza, burger, and of course, craft beer. When sitting on their sun-soaked patio, you can take in the serene sounds of the Grand River flowing by. The murals surrounding you include a floral feature by a Detroit-based artist, Ouizi, and a sky-high abstract painting across the way by artist California artist, Ricky Watts, that’s almost as colorful as a Michigan sunset sky. Try a Monkey Mouth IPA at its home brewery, and pair it with a hearty dinner, fit to please any palate.

Ogma Brewing Co. is a newer Jackson favorite, but a favorite indeed. Their unique, ever-changing brews and deliciously crafted cuisine brings in crowds for every meal. Known for its Asian fusion foods and hoppy ales, Ogma practically beckons any visitor, so that they can see the hype for themselves. When the crowd gets to be a bit much, step outside to take in the views from their beer garden. It’s impossible to miss see the brightly colored mural by Australian artist, Kitt Bennett, among others, if you’re willing to wander a little during social district hours.

What are you waiting for? If you’re eager to spend a worry-free afternoon or evening enjoying local libations or food that stands out from the others, pay a visit to downtown Jackson, where there’s something for everyone. Plan your trip and learn more about Jackson at experiencejackson.com.
