Since its inception in 2006 the Grand Traverse Industries Mancelona Truck Garden has increased sales threefold and began participating the Michigan Land Use Institute Taste The Local Difference Program as well as selling at the Mancelona Farm Market. Not only has the garden more then doubled its cultivated growing area to close to an acre, but has increased the types of produce that are grown, including tomatoes, squash, green peppers, onions, green beans, egg plant, cucumbers, kohlrabi, carrots, cabbage, potatoes, dill, and sage. GTI purchased and set up a greenhouse next to the garden space in Mancelona. This allows the teaching of additional skills to GTI workers and getting an early start on the growing season. GTI staff and crew began seedlings in February and will prepare more plants for early greenhouse starts in 2013 and will continue to increase sales and expand even further the skills and wage earning opportunities for workers in Mancelona.
