Sunlight Gardens

Battle Creek

Sunlight Gardens is a two acre urban farm located on 245
Kendall Street North in Battle Creek, Michigan. The farm
was started by Devón Wilson as a way to not only increase
accessibility to healthy food, but also inspire and educate
the next generation of black farmers. We sell our produce to
local restaurants and at farmers markets with a focus on
keeping prices low and accepting food assistance programs.
In our mission to inspire future farmers, we work with local
schools to give farming presentations to students. We also
accept youth from the neighborhood into our Farm Squad
Program, which equips participants with knowledge and

skills to be efficient in urban farming. The Farm Squad sup-
ports our sustainability plan to create a talent pool of black

farmers. Sunlight Gardens is structured to employ those
who are residents in the community. Community members
enjoy many benefits, including discounts on produce and

admission to our events. We also donate produce and coor-
dinate events with restaurants to provide hot food to fami-
lies in need. Sunlight Gardens is working for equitable food

systems and supporting sustainable change.
