What to Ask Your Farmers Market Favorites

Strolling the farmers market is part of the Michigander lifestyle: with a farmers market in virtually every town or city in the Pleasant Peninsula, you’re bound to make it a part of your weekly routine. Are you making the most of your experience? Connect with your local sources at the market by talking food! Here are our suggestions for making a connection with your favorite market vendors:

For Farmers:

  1. What are your growing practices?

You may see signs that say Certified Natural, Certified Organic, no-spray, biodynamic, etc., but take the chance to ask your farmer what that means and why they choose to farm in that way. You may learn something new – and find a new favorite farm in the process.

  1. Where is your farm, and do you have a farmstand?

See if there are opportunities to connect with your favorite fresh produce vendors outside of the specific weekdays of the market – maybe you need to pick up another head of garlic in a couple of days, or a refresh of greens. Ask them if they have a farmstand located nearby, or even if they have a CSA (community-supported agriculture) share

  1. What’s coming into season in the next few weeks?

Eating local means eating seasonally! Ask your farmer what to expect in the coming weeks to make the most of your meal planning.

  1. Can I tag you on social media?

Don’t forget to share the good news about local farmers on social media! You may be introducing this small business to another eater.

For Value-Added Producers:

  1. How did you get started with your product?

Ready for a good story? Often, food makers have a deep connection with their product, whether it be a heritage food, a found passion, or something driven by a dietary need. Knowing the ‘why’ behind your food makes for a more delicious bite!

  1. Do you purchase any of your ingredients locally?

Did you know that purchases made locally return 3 times as much capital to your community? Bakers purchase local fruit, hot sauce makers source local peppers, and kombucha makers purchase local lavender. Find out how your purchase may be lifting an entire food chain!

  1. Do you have any recipes?

Curious about how to use the challah bread you just picked up? How about that vinegar? Ask your vendor! They know exactly how best to enjoy their product – and may even have a recipe to get you started.

For Market Managers:

  1. How do I take advantage of alternative currencies in the market?

For some markets and programs, it’s necessary to stop at an information booth to get set up to use SNAP dollars and more. For some programs, like WIC Produce Connection (new in 2024), you’ll want to speak directly with your vendor.

  1. Do you have totes for purchase?

Show your love for your market – and fill it with all your local finds!
