The Ypsi SNAP Gap Steps In

Did you know that 14.5% of Michigan’s population receives SNAP benefits, the federal and foremost program for food assistance to low-income households? That’s 1.47 million people – all of whom see an immediate gap in food access during the longest federal government shutdown in American history.

In Ypsilanti, the food community is not waiting for bureaucracy to catch up while tables go empty. Growing Hope and the Ypsilanti Farmers Markets have launched the Ypsi SNAP Gap, an emergency initiative to ensure residents of the southeast Michigan community receive healthy, affordable food until federal SNAP benefits are reinstated.

How to Find and Spend SNAP Gap Tokens

Every Saturday at the Ypsilanti Indoor Farmers Market, shoppers with a valid EBT/Bridge Card or anyone food-insecure can receive $40 of SNAP gap tokens to use at the market each week. These tokens are eligible to purchase any food item – including hot foods and prepared meals, as well as fresh produce. These tokens will be available throughout March 2026 and are usable only at the Ypsilanti Farmers Market.

“Each token nourishes a family and supports a farmer,” explains Growing Hope Executive Director Julius Buzzard. “That’s how we resist scarcity by practicing abundance.”

Shoppers can also use their Double Up Food Bucks benefits at the Ypsilanti Farmers Market, which is also bridging the gap between funding by matching any dollar spent on Michigan-grown produce, without any daily limit. Double Up Food Bucks is an alternative currency for fresh or newly eligible frozen produce without added sugar, salt, or oil. Those in the southeast Michigan community are welcomed at the Ypsilanti Farmers Market, regardless of spending ability or other barriers.
