Growing Hope Awards Inaugural Sprout Grants

Growing Hope has announced the recipients of its first-ever Sprout Grants, aimed at empowering local community gardens in Ypsilanti. These grants foster community self-reliance, self-determination, and food sovereignty by supporting neighborhood gardens to grow fresh produce and build stronger, more resilient communities.

The 2024 Sprout Grant recipients include several dedicated community gardens, each with unique projects to enhance their spaces:

  • Frog Island Community Garden will install an ADA-accessible path.
  • Parkridge Community Garden plans to purchase a tiller for more efficient gardening.
  • M.E.S.S. House Community Garden will buy tools, construct raised beds, and plant fruit trees to expand its community farm.
  • Chidester Place Community Garden is set to build fencing to protect against wildlife.
  • Alley Garden will transform recycling bins into raised garden beds along a path.
  • Cross Street Village Gardeners will start a small herbal garden with the necessary fencing and tools.
  • Normal Park Community Garden intends to clean and enhance paths with gravel or wood chips.

These gardens were chosen for their dedication to enhancing local food production, improving access to fresh produce, and creating spaces for community learning and connection. Each garden will receive financial support and resources tailored to its needs, helping expand its impact.

“We are thrilled to support these gardens in advancing food sovereignty and empowering our community,” said Julius Buzzard, Executive Director of Growing Hope. “These grants are about more than just growing food; they’re about growing community and ensuring everyone in Ypsilanti has the opportunity to thrive.”

The Sprout Grants are part of Growing Hope’s mission to promote sustainable and just food systems by investing in community-driven solutions to food insecurity. With these grants, Growing Hope is building a future where every Ypsilanti resident has access to fresh, nutritious food and the knowledge to cultivate it themselves.
