Feast Your Eyes at ‘Food for Thought’ at Art in the Loft

How do food and art find a home together? “A plate is very much the same as a blank canvas,” explains Justin Christensen-Cooper, Director at Art in the Loft of Alpena. Visual and culinary arts share a table at this Michigan fine arts center, which will host a ‘Food for Thought’ juried exhibition from September 25th through November 7th.

From photography to metalwork, sculpture, and painting, the 45 artists selected were left to interpret the theme of food as they wished. Christensen-Cooper illustrated that the subject matter was intentionally open-ended – from the growing and harvesting of food, to the kitchen scene, to the eating and enjoyment of food, the gallery had space for all interpretations. One piece that inspires Christensen-Cooper is a tableau (literally) of a young family eating dinner, and all the chaos that ensues at these kinds of meals.

This year’s theme also highlights the programming at Art in the Loft that celebrates the culinary arts and empowers the Northeast Michigan community to enjoy food making. Ready, Set, Create is a space for area fourth graders to explore art in one hour of class, and then make a flavorful lunch in the second hour. Students with special needs are able to get into the kitchen as well, with REACH, or Recognize Everyone’s Ability and Creative Heart.

This juried exhibition will culminate in a fundraiser that will support these great programs and also plans to immerse event-goers in the world of food. From live food sculpting to small plates crafted by local chefs, this annual event will be a feast for all senses.
