Everything You Need To Know About The New Detroit People’s Food Co-op!

Detroit People’s Food Co-op (DPFC) is now open in Detroit’s North End! Located on Woodward Avenue about a half-mile north of East Grand Boulevard, DPFC is a black-led, community-owned grocery cooperative. Through democratic control of the co-op by its members, its goal is to increase Detroiters’ access to healthy food and food education.

What is a food co-op?

According to the DPFC website, “Cooperatives are member-owned, member-governed businesses that operate for the benefit of their owners according to common principles agreed upon by the international cooperative community.”

Co-ops are voluntarily owned and operated by their members for their benefit. In a food co-op, for example, members ensure that the products stocked reflect the community’s preferences and values.

Do you have to be a member of DPFC to shop?

No, membership is not required! Everyone is welcome to shop and enjoy the store.

When is it open?

The Co-op is open daily from 8 am – 8 pm!

Does the Co-op accept EBT/SNAP?

Yes! DPFC also participates in Double Up Food Bucks for all purchases of fruits and vegetables!

What types of products are available at the co-op?

DPFC is a full-service grocery store, stocking its shelves with produce, dairy, meat, seafood, pantry items, specialty cheeses, beer & wine, household essentials, and body care products. 

Bring your own containers, or use the ones provided to stock up on bulk items such as flour, nuts, beans, and beyond!

The in-house deli and bakery, North End Deli, makes fresh sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and more. 

Where does the co-op source its products?

The co-op offers a wide variety of products – you’ll find nationally-known brands as well as your favorite Detroit-area and Michigan-based products.

What is the benefit of joining the co-op as a member?

Joining a co-op is about joining a community! It provides opportunities to be a part of organizational decision-making and to share knowledge with like-minded people. Membership also offers occasional financial benefits. 

What is the cost to become a member?

A lifelong membership costs $200 per person, which can be paid in one lump sum or split into 10 payments. Learn more and sign up here!
